Introduction
Knowledge of mathematics and statistics is essential for decision making both in industry and the service professions. Students at Edith Cowan University can study mathematics and statistics by enrolling the Bachelor of Science(Applied Mathematics and Statistics). The program offered emphasises Calculus, Operations Research, Applied Statistics and Mathematical Modelling. There is a commitment to the use of technology in the teaching of mathematics and statistics and the students are introduced to a range of relevant computer packages. In addition to the degree course students can elect enrol in units that lead to a Minor in Mathematics, Statistics or Engineering Mathematics.
Students who wish to deepen their knowledge after having obtained a pass degree in mathematics may elect to enrol in further study through the Bachelor of Science(Honours) in Mathematics, which is a further year of study culminating in the preparation of a thesis in an applied statistics area.
At the postgraduate level the focus is on applications of statistics, with a Graduate Diploma of Science (Mathematics), Graduate Certificate in Geostatistics and postgraduate research in time series analysis and geostatistics.
